The vital resource for development and the main engine of growth for every country is “information” which is rapidly gaining an evolutionary dynamic role in the wide span of human activities. Management has been no exception. Management, as frequently stated, is decision making for which accurate and timely information is indispensable.
Significance of information and of MIS, the course of it’s development is discussed before a pragmatic definition of it is presented. Distinction is drawn between data and information and proper Justification offered for MIS and it’s characteristics. The concluding portion of the article draws on pitfalls in MIS systems which, emanating from designer in—experience and lack of insight, might generate unreliable information for management.
